Gallipoli Aug 6, 2015

Seventy years ago was the day the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. In the midst of our good time I want to remember for a second all the people that died in a second on this day and after.

Ok well, today we went to Gallipoli. A big thanks to Kirsten and Rolf for taking us everywhere and doing so much fun stuff with us. We started with a trip to the fish market where fishermen bring in their catch.

Special sponges that grow here.

It is true I am a hypocrite. I accept it and guilty as charged, but these guys were alive. It made me sick to think of them in this bucket.

More squid creatures.

These creatures were alive as well. They kept blowing out little puffs of water. Somehow I don't feel so bad about them.

These ceramics are typical to Gallipoli.

A view from the old city to the new one on shore.

First coffee.

Excellent local pastries

 Getting the nets sorted.

Second coffee coming up. Hey it was a 15 minute walk.

We didn't have coffee. We were too hot. Rolf had a beer. It was after 10a.m. and the rest of us had fizzy water with lemon. Snacks came with it.

The total sunbathing experience.

An unlikely couple.

Looking back at the Gallipoli beach and the place we had a drink.

Bus for those who do not want to, or can't, walk.

I do not really know what this is. All around the edge are fish hooks. The lines are wrapped around in the bucket and the sinkers are at the bottom right. Three guys were sitting there creating these things. They were completely engrossed in their work. Then some other guys would cover them and put them in a van.

There is still a real life in Gallipoli that is not tourists. The fishermen are real and so are these basket makers. The really big ones are catch octopi. I told the guy they were to catch husbands, but he did not think that was funny.

They use a combination of reed and wire. They do not soak the reed so it must be quite fresh. They do soak the thread they tie the reeds together with. I think that is so it will shrink and hold the basket together more tightly.

Kristen makes a basketI make a basket. These guys were super fun. The wife did not want to be in the photos, but there she is.

Soon it was time for more water. It was 39c.

These pictures are of the castle at Gallipoli.

In the vaulted rooms you could stand in different places and your voice would be huge.

Art installation. Enough said.

Views from castle wall.

Art exhibition based on Di Vinci's Vitruvian Man. It's all done with mirrors.

Guys mending their nets after an early morning of fishing.

                                       Other scenes around Gallipoli.

                                                        Lunch

The streets are so narrow that one can stand in the middle and touch both sides. Still motorised vehicles come by.

After a great time in Gallipoli we drove to Porto Cesario and had gelato.
